England vs West Indies Test Series & The Unpredictability of the 2020 AFL Season - Episode 37

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Pilch joins Hamish to review the recent first test of the Wisden Trophy (ENG vs WI), preview the upcoming second test as well as discussing the undpredictability and relative equality in the 2020 AFL season as of round 6.

Cheese settle. Welcome back to youon the wall podcast. This is episode thirty seven. I think I haveshort term memory lost, because I'd I genuinely check it every episode about fiveseconds before we start to get every time. But I can convene. This isepisode thirty seven, so I've got you there. Lads. We're onceagain joined by peach, hence my laughter. He's head. Welcome back man. Thanks, mate and chess for that ego boost. Pretty Big One.You deserve it. You need to be lower down a peg every now andthen. So today we're just confute a bit of genuine chat about sport, like we did the other week, but today it's probably going to be mainlyabout the cricket, the test match that just finished. Test Cricket is backand, believe it or not, England went down. So our predictions wereoff by quite a fair way. We thought would be an easy whitewash forEngland and were already we already lost the prediction. Is Only one test intothe series. Well, how do you find the testament? We lost quitea bit of it. What do you think of it? Yeah, Ithink you probably watched a bit more than I did, but obviously a verydisappointing result for England, but I think it was mainly due to West indiesexceeding our expectations. I think I was. I was quite surprised by them.We thought they would probably just copy it, just cut the copy sausage. But yeah, they put up a good fight and especially happy with theirbatting. Yeah, I didn't really stick.

They did quite well overall. Whenyou look at the totals they made, you'd probably be like, what doyou want about pilch? But yeah, the just the way they battered, they were quite like characteristically the Indians. If you west Indians, if youthought of a stereotype, you just think of like a flashy player whodoesn't really put much value on their wicket. But yeah, a lot of theplayers really fought hard and did yeah, just didn't hand over there their poleto the English team and made them work very hard for it, whichis a good thing to see for the West indies. I also need topoint out something. I think I said on the preview episode that had mywas like dropped for attitude and something, but Shimron had my Darren, Bravo, and Chemo Paolo is also in and around the team. All three ofthem rejected the call up because they wanted to stay home. I really familiesbecause coronavirus. So apologies to those fellows. Obviously they're listening to the PODCAST.So yeah, pretty dog for me just having a crack at them whenthey're doing a pretty respectable thing. So that makes this when even more impressive. The wet the West indies probably missing two, if not three, starters. I know Jason Holder came out and said Jermaine Black Woods probably only playingbecause those guys aren't on the tour. So yeah, pretty pretty interesting stuff. They're not I sell news for England to when you hit find out thatthey could be there like they're a weekend side. As an England fan,how did you see this result? We we do you think it's disastrous orwhat? You just think it's a bit of a first test back? Justlet let it go water under the bridge. Yeah, well, it is firsttest back, but obviously it's a disappointment. You don't want to beyou don't want to be losing to the West indies on your own home turf. But yeah, I wouldn't say disastrous...

...and obviously we said it would bea low scoring game and the West indies. I thought about it really well, especially their middle order, which coupled and probably aren't first string, asyou said, with those players being out. So yeah, yeah, I don'tthink, apart from maybe black would, I don't think any of them playedflashy innings that would make highlight reels. But looks like Shane dowage and Rostand chase, although they didn't. Well, Dow it's got a fifteenthe first things, but they didn't score biggs, they didn't make big scores. But the innings were really like characteristic. They were personified the wind, basicallyjust gritty performances. Chase didn't even look like he was hitting the ballthat well, but he just fought in both things and he actually was oneof the better players on over this course of the five days. But forme the biggest story of this test such was the umpiring. The umpiring wasabsolutely woeful. The only other umpires that I can think who have had aworst GIG was bomb rubbing in one of the ashes test matches. But andAlim dare not giving someone snicking off the firstly. That's pretty proud, butthis, this was pretty bad. I have to admit a lot of themwere tough calls, but I think there was seven or eight overturned calls thewent against the umpires original decision, which is just horrible really. Like youdon't normally see more than three or four and a whole test match and wewill basically setting that many pertainings. So real shocker from Richard Kettle Brown RichardEllingworth. I know, like the players, it was their first test back andI'm sure they and had too much warm up. Like I don't thinkthere would have been standing at practice matches for two months. Just look atnuts. But pretty poor stuff really,...

...and I'm not suggesting there was likeany intentional cheating or anything, but it is interesting to note that this isthe first test that non neutral umpires have been allowed. So both these umpiresare from England and out of the seven or eight overturned decisions, I thinkonly one when in England's favor, like all the others were given in England'sfavor. And then we're overturned for the West indies. So maybe there's abit of a subconscious bias that umpires just can't they just can't oversee. Reallywhen there's a fifty fifty call, they might just go with their home teamand I'm like, yeah, as I'm saying, I'm not suggesting their purposelytrying to get England to win, but maybe this is something we're just goingto have to deal with when there's non neutral umpires, that their natural, like subconscious decisions will tend to lead towards the English players. But I guess, DRS, that's why it's there. So, although it's not good footyfrom the UMPIRES, you don't have to want to have to rely on drsfor every single decision pretty much. But there was no incorrect decisions made inthe end because drs corrected them all. So at the end of the dayit's probably not the worst result for the match. Like I didn't think ithad a bearing on the match, but it was just something that was prettyhard to not talk about. Really, it was pretty horrible for you. From then, something I've started, well, I've only started yesterday, but I'vebeen thinking of starting it for a while. Like I was mainly thinkingabout it for NRL and AFL, but I wanted to do my own sortof best and fairest MVP brownlow dally and whatever you want to call it,and just see what my end score is and see how close it is tothe official one, see how it differs, and I just saw like you knowwhat, what, what's stopping me from doing this for other sports aswell? So I'm going to start doing this for just any sporting event thatI watch, and this is the first...

...one I've done it for. SoI got you to send me your votes as well. We did a five, hundred and forty, three, two, one, because I think three isnot enough people. If I'm honest, I like, why not have moreif you can, Yep for me. My five went to Jason Holder.Three, six far, although I think Shannon Gabriel took more wickets inthe whole test match. He took nine over the two innings, I think. I don't know if whole lot it took a wicket in that second innings. He took one. So you finished with seven for the match. ButI think he's captaincy and he did a little bit with a boat as well. Didn't make too many runs, but that knock in the second innings heonly made what do you make? Fourteen, not out, but Germain black wouldlook started looking like he was getting a bit shaky and it started lookinglike Ben Stokes has but one really good areas and that they could have clutchedup England and had a great test win. But Jason holder just thought it through. He basically just said to Black Hord, let's just play tip andrun, let's just drop it into the gaps and run singles, and thenEngland's going to panic, and that's exactly what happened. So although it's afourteen, not our it's not great, I think it was worth its weightin gold really. So that was why I gave him the five votes andI really do think that six for set up the test match after that spellon Day to England and basically chasing, chasing the westernise the whole time.I don't think England really got back ahead of the game really, except formaybe a thirty minute period on day five. You gave your five to shunning Gabriel. Yep, what was that? What went behind that decision making?Well, for me there was a bit of OCD there. It was solelybecause he won the official man of the match. So that's where I gavehim the five. I'm sorry, man, but to be fair, he tookfour wickets in the first five we gets in the second. So Ican't really I can't really fault them giving...

...him the amount of the match like. It'd be pretty tough to argue otherwise. Yeah, I'll COP. I'll copyhim getting the man of the match for you, but I don't copthat as a reason, just because he got the official one. Otherwise Iwould be the point of doing this thing. Otherwise I'll just have the exact samebrownlow and Dalyam or whatever. But yeah, it's rock in the armin the showdowns. Whoever wins the showdown, metal gets the gets the three votes. On Browno not. Yeah, but it's probably like the same peopledeciding that. Yeah, probably is where it's like we have nothing to dowith the gezs, who've picked shotting Gabriel there. But not to be fair, he was probably the outstanding bowler across the five days. Jason Holder, although he took seven wickets for the match and was really influential, he reallyonly had one spell, which tour England part where Gabriel pretty much every spellhe bowled he look like taking a wicket. So yeah, very fair there. We both went Jermain Blackwood for the four votes. Yep, pretty muchsolely for his second innings really steered the side home. Yeah, he's putninety five out of two hundred, so you don't really have to say muchelse. And he came in. He came in when they were looking Englandwill probably looking like winning at that stage, three hundred and thirty, and heyes, I studied the ship, as you said. Yeah, hecame in at three hundred and twenty seven and left left the party when theyare only needed eleven to win. And although it was a really bad shot, I was very disappointed that he didn't get his century. I think itwas a match winning innings. Yeah, and he deserved a hundred for it. And he has something. He loves playing England. They were showing histop scores and stuff and I think four of his top five and now againstEngland. So I know if he's just played a limited amount of tests anda lot of them have been against England, coincidentally, but maybe it's just gotthe wood over some of the bowlers. But yeah, he was really aggressive. Showed really good intent which I think a lot of batsman lacked inthis test. I think a lot of them got bogged down at the crease, especially in the England top order and...

...yeah, he really took on thegame ran really well as well. And Yeah, just thinks the aggressive intenthe showed similar to what a stokes shows when he bats. It really justputs the oppositions side on the back foot and puts a lot of the bowlsand the captain under a lot of pressure. So although he didn't get to thatcentury, it was definitely a match winning knock and would have arguably beendeserved to get the men in the match award himself. So yeah, Ithink that's a no brainer there. If he's getting anything less than a threevoter from either of US auld have been very stiff. Yeah, Jason Holderand Shannon Gabra. So done the reversal, theft a number three. No needto explain that. For the to voter, we've gone Roston Chase Roston. He just did nothing out standing really, just really solid all test match. He had two starts. He had a forty seven and a thirty seven, both fairly slow, but you put in good partnerships in both innings andthere with the ball. Yeah, I have to admit he doesn't look likethe greatest bowler, but he took two wickets in the second innings and didn'tbomb the first so hard to really fault him if he's a part time attaking two wickets in an inning. So fair play to Roston. Yeah,as we said, nothing special, just did bits and pretty much every inningshe needed to. And then number one, I've Gone Shane Dowrich and you've gonestokes he. Yeah, how come you went stokes? He? Well, upon hearing the chase made forty odd and thirty order. Actually thought hemade more than that the first innings. So if you haven't mind, I'llactually swap stokes and chase because obviously, based on the stats, stokes hada much better test match. The WESTERNIS did win, but stokes, hetook for forty and then to twenty or...

...thirty odd in the second innings ands which helped the English innings, has by far England's best player. SoI'll give him. I'll give him the two votes there. Yeah, fairenough. I didn't give stokes a vote, but it is pretty stiff. Hewas definitely one of the best players over the course of the five days. But for me, Dour, it's impact. Although he didn't score ahuge score, he scored pretty score in the first inning sixty one, whichis one of his highest scores in like two or three years. He's hada shocking time of it, but yeah, that's really impressive. Days ruggaled inEngland last time he had naverage a for I think over the three matchto our juge. So this is really big for his confidence and really reallybig for the West Indian team because they do bat deep, but there's nopoint if you're going to bat deep and all the bats been about. Sogood for them that they have someone down at seven or eight who can performwhen they need into and once again, similar to chase, not an outstandinginnings in the second innings, but he made twenty or thirty seven rocks. He was really struggling against archer like looked really uncomfortable quite a few of theshort ones he turned his head away from it and could have gone anywhere. But he fought really hard, as he did in the first innings, andso I think once again that twenty helped really help steer the side home here. I think you put on how much did you put on? You puton sixty eight with black wood. So he only scored twenty of it,but he was there. He and he also did a lot of like hedid quite a few pep talks to black wood when he would try and sizeup Jimmy over his head or something. You'd go down to the other end, Carmen down. So I don't think that impact can be understated. Andhe also had a good game with the gloves. I think you had fiveto five or six dismissals. So yeah, took a good catch down the legside to dismiss Sidley. Yeah, but pretty stiff from pretty stiff aStokesie for me? Definitely. Yeah,...

...for me, just the fact thatit was the captain in the losing side. He dropped the catch in the secondinnings. I think the way he's two dismissals were pretty disappointing. Ithink he got himself out as opposed to the bowl of getting him out.But yeah, bold really well on that. Final learnings. I did think itwas going to be another stokes moment of magic there for a second. But yeah, I have to say England, they didn't enough to win this testmatch. They just didn't take their chances in the second innings, Ithink. So they ended up taking six wickets, but I reckon with allthe chances added up. They could have had eleven or twelve. I thinkthat was for drop catches maybe. And then ZAC cruelly missed, like it'shard to say missing run out because he didn't pick it up. So itwas like, even if you picked it up, he probably when to hitthe starts, but it was a pretty clear cut chance. I don't thinkhe would have. I don't think you would have needed a direct hit becausethe bloke was halfway down the pitch. Bla was steaming into the stumps. But yeah, so that was a missed opportunity. And then stokes tried topremeditate a cut shot at slip. He started running the other way and itwas a fine edge and he got beaten by it. Yeah, who elsedrop catches? Rory Burns, one straight through his hands a gully. Didn'teven react. And who is the third Butler drop one down the leg side? That's right, I think. I feel like best might have dropped oneoff his don't part of it, but yeah, I think there was anothertough chance somewhere in there. And then so that really cost them. Theytook six wickets all that out of it and would have been enough for themto bowl them out. So and a lot of it was against Blackwood,I'm pretty sure. So if they got him out on forty odd, fiftyodd, all of a sudden the West indies needed fifty or sixty with luck, you know, not so informed bats when at the crease. So yeah, that's pretty much it in terms of...

...the match overall, in terms ofselection for the next test. Where do you think England go from here?May Well, obviously it's the Joe Rout coming in dilemma. I mean Ithink we both want denly to make way for a route, but you neverknow with the with the ACB, I mean even though he made a seventy, cruelly might cruelly might come out. But hopefully it's Stanley. And then, obviously I'm hoping we bring in broad as well, probably from Mark Wood, who might be a bit unlucky there, but broad needs to play. Itwas evident, evident by the way we bowled that we needed him inthere. So two changes. For me they're yeah, I agree with you, to be honest, not so much the would deserves to be dropped.I actually didn't mind board being left out. But yeah, I think for methey left him out due to the fact that they're just going to rotatethrough that bowling group all summer all winter for us. So I yeah,I think pretty much every test it's just going to be a bolt alla comeout in, the bowler come in and I reckon this test I wouldn't besurprised. Yet was mark would, unless Jimmy or joffer have injury niggles thatthey want to you know, rest. Yeah. So yeah, I would. I would sit out. Would for this one and then maybe Jimmy thenext one. Yeah, because you don't want Jimmy Bowling too much. Butthen again joffer is coming back from injury, so maybe they'll sit him out.Yeah, I think broad he should should have a crack back in thatback in that bowling attack, and then the rest of it I'm pretty finewith. I don't think there will be any other changes apart from yet routecoming in. I'm praying that it's denley cruelly made seventy two or seventy twoor something, seventy year, seventy something. Yeah, and then he looks reallygood in it, really good against the spin, really confident in hisfootwork. When he went, he went. He didn't really hit too many inbetween shots and he really manipulated the field well. Yeah, which wasgood to see. He would have to...

...bat at three because I think rootsgoing about it for so he might not be able to utilize those spin skillsstraight away anyway. But he is an opening bats and by trade. Soyeah, I'm sure he'll be fine against the newer ball, against the fasterbowling and yeah, so I'm praying it's denly. But yeah, as yousaid, we never really know what the England selection it's pretty, pretty hardto predict. And then, apart from that, once again Butler very disappointingin both innings. Didn't drop the cut as well, which was half butgot to be taking that. But once again they're not going to drop him, are they heard? They love they love him. Yeah, so,folks Hees are lucky there. Yeah, and then in terms of the nexttest, we're looking at the sixteen of July, so Thursday night. We'refilming this on Tuesday but it's coming out on the Thursday. So if you'relistening to it on the day of Upload, it'll be in a couple of hoursprobably. It's up at Manchester. Not really too sure what that meansin terms of the pitch conditions. Also, I think the Southampton Pitch was verygood. I think it was fair to both bat and ball. Alot of the times I love seeing green seamers and I love seeing teams getrolled for a hundred, but in terms of bandness of cricket, I dothink that's pretty dug and this one was. Yeah, it was pretty fair cricket, wicked really, which is rare to see our days in international cricket. So yeah, that's another thing I wanted to say. And Yeah,I have to say our predictions looking quite off. A. We've already gotthe series prediction wrong with the whitewashed. We could still get England winning wrong. Keema Roach, I think you only took like two wickets or something.Yeah, we're looking in double there for West in eastop we could take ashy hope. He's already like a hundred and fifty runs back or something.Looking in trouble there, although he looked good when he batted the first innings. Yeah, just doesn't look like he has the fight of the other batsman. And then who do we back in...

...for the England? It was stokea back stokes, you, I think you did as well. Yeah,so that's looking on the ball and then on the ball ae and then thebowl is. I don't even know who did but well, will do areview. Ever, so I think I did. I think I said Archer. So I mean or none of our bowl is really had a blinder, but I think archer took a few in the second inning. So that wasa lot. That's could be a smoky in depending on the depending on whatthe pictures are in the next two tests. If there's a bit of dry, dusty one, he could do bits in the seconds. He actually bowledreally well. He impressed me a lot better than the other English spinning optionsin my opinion. Definitely. That's pretty heard the INGOM cyddy series. Verymuch looking forward to that second test. Interested to see what England do withroute coming back in and just into interested see how the England top or togo, because there's quite a few players who don't have cemented spots down really, apart from stokes and pope. That hole top law and I guess route, but everyone else is pretty much playing for their spot. So yeah, but be interested to see. The squad should be coming out pretty soon onsay it's really two days before they release like a fourteen man squad or thirteenman squad. So we'll find out that. I'll tweet that if anything comes out. So go check us out on twitter. Oh my God, Iforgot again. I was going to do like a social media plug at thestart of the episode, but yeah, I do it now anyway. Ifyou don't already follow us on Instagram, if you're listening, go watch iton youtube vice versa. Andalso, another thing, if anyone has any episode suggestions or just questions oranything, feel free to send them to me because, like, I'm actuallygot one of the all time response rates,...

...which is a good thing, butI'll respond rapidly. Yeah, so that's just that. That done allright. So for the next part of this, I just wanted to havea bit of a chat. To be honest, there's not too many sportsthat we both watch intently, given the fact that I watched our or youyou want to AFL. I try to, but I can't too much because ofthe NRL and, like, I watched a lot of other rubbish swartzlike the ufcfone and stuff like that. But the AFL, I wanted toask you some questions about it. Obviously you've watched it a lot more thanme. Yeah, it seems very unpredictable this year. We're only into roundsseven coming up this weekend. But why do you reckon it's so unpredictable thisseason? I don't know if it's rough so far, but what are youreckon? Yeah, well, I mean obviously this season is very different withthe covid situation. So I mean that's probably the most logical answer, alsothe shorter quarters. But it's hard to pinpoint because teams each week. Youknow, some weeks they're coming out playing unreal footage and then the next weekthey'll just come out and produce a stinker. So I mean could potentially be thatsome teams thrive with crowds. We know Richmond, Richmond and Collingwood likea crowd. But yeah, it's hard really to know. It's not doingcertainly isn't doing wonders for the Sports Bet. But yeah, I don't mind itthough. It's more exciting. Yeah, it's a lot more assigning to watch. Yeah, that's something I've kind of had an issue with the AFLover the last few seasons. I think every year there's four or five teamsthat they're just a complete leveled off. And although this year it's not withoutthe bad teams, like other Adelaids in woeful form and some of the othersides aren't looking too good. But yeah, I just think in the competitions alot closer to year. I think the gap between maybe like one andten is that big and even like even...

...the Adelaide are bad. I thinkthe gap from like eighteen to eleven so on that big either. So allover all over that table it's pretty tight. It is a especially in the middlebecause you've got one and as you croudy's playing him having an infact effect. You think it probably would do the opposite, where the better team wouldjust win out no matter what, because there's no hair ground advantage. Butthat's interesting today. But yeah, I just think this is maybe a bitcynical of me, but I actually just think the standards a bit worse thisyear. I don't know how you feel. A bit that a about this andI know you support port, who are up the top of the table, so you're probably a bit offended by this. But I think the tableis starting to kind of get back to normality, I think. Yeah,West Coast should they're all starting to win and like St Kilda's and stuff arestarting to lose. So we're starting to get back to normality there. Yeah, but I think the team's who we penciled in for finals this season justdon't look that good at all really. I know you said the Port Adelaidegws game was pretty low quality. Yeah, you said that missing lots of tiretsand stuff like that. Yeah, and I know you were saying GeelongBrisbane was also not ideal. Zara. Now, I was tigs Tyx once. It was like thirty four, hundred, twenty six. It was just itwas shocking. No, but you're saying Brisbane were really bad against alongor something way. Oh well, yeah, well, because obviously I was ourfor Brisbane were premiership favorites after last week and then they started really well, but then Gelong just gone on top and Brisbane sort of looked like theywent into their shells a little bit and just copped it. So I wasa bit surprising. But yeah, obviously just a long looking quite good now. Yeah, that Richmond game, I did hear a lot of people sayingit was just rubbish. Yeah, Dem Damian Hardwitt came out and roasted theSwan's for just parking the buss. But...

I mean, I don't think youcan. I don't think you can just come out and say that, becauseRichmond obviously aren't up to standard this season and it was very wet, though, to be fair, I was absolutely pissing down the in time match. But still, yeah, like it's not a bad thing at all, evenif it's a bit lower quality and just makes a closer competition. But Idefinitely think there's something to that. I don't think there's any teams that havegone got to dominate necessarily this year. Yeah, like port they're on topof the table and, if you like, I know their favorites for the minorpremiership at the moment, maybe for the premiership overall. I don't knowwhat that market is. But realistically, if you look at their performances, they've beaten for out of form teams. They lost to the Brisbane lines andthen you said they want to bad a pretty low quality game on the weekend. So yeah, maybe it's just a low quality match, but once again, maybe it comes down to all the lockdown stuff and maybe give it twoor three weeks and will be, you know, swallowing our words, aslike Collingwood and all that, bounce back and look as good as ever.Yeah, another another thing to point out is it could be a motivational thingwith some teams because you see luck players not even, especially for Richmond, not even going up to the hub. And I reckon, if Richmond hadn'twon two premierships out the last three, I think that might have been littlebit different. I reckon, the players probably would have gone up there. But saying as though the one two premierships there and obviously the COVID covids makingthis season seem a little less important to some teams. Potentially it could besomething in that as well, which was interes a dog act. But yeah, but now it's good to watch as a new Tral and I'm all thefans of the lower level teams, like...

I know broadbent, who's a friendof the show cult and fan. Yeah, he's very happy with the team beingcompetitive so far this year. Yeah, it's just interesting to see. Willhave to watch that over the next few weeks. Yeah, that's prettymuch all I've got to say today only a short one, but in thein the coming episodes, we we're going to start doing so that. Ithink there's sixty days or something to the NFL starts and me Pilch in someof our mates we're big NFL fantasy players as a lot of the world isprobably the greatest fantasy sport, I think. Yeah, I felt it's just areally, really good point scoring system, great fun. So I think overthe next six weeks I think we're going to do or even more, seven or eight weeks, I think we're going to do an episode a weekon an NFL fantasy position. Pretty much. Yep, just have a conversation aboutthat. Pill will be joining me for all those episodes. Will bedrowne by Curtis, James Curtis, when we can. So that's going tobe the next episode. We're going to be chatting through the top twelve quarterbacksin each of our respective rankings. And then, in terms of what's comingup next, I know I mentioned it on the podcast that went out theother day with Rhett. We've got an episode where we're going to discuss we'vebeen doing quite a lot of decade things. So I feel like it's fitting tocap all that off with WHO's the best athlete of the two thousand andten decade? And then I've got a few others lined up, such assporting events you wish you're alive to see. I know I'm doing an a fonereview with peanut in a few weeks in an NBA predictions video with himas well, so look forward to that stuff. Yeah, I'm pretty muchthanks for listening if you've got to this point. I know it's only ashort one, but I'm sure a lot of you don't mind that, becauseI know pilled, you don't mind those facially because you're a big your bigadvocate of an hour and fifteen and stuff...

...like that's too long, but it'sshown. So yeah, I hope you've enjoyed listening. Thanks for joining meas always, pilch, much appreciated. And Yeah, that's pretty much well. I've got to say. Thanks, WILL CHEESE MATE.
