PGA Championship, ENG vs PAK Test Series & ENG vs IRE ODI Series - Episode 48

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Hamish is joined by new guest Finn Broadbent and returning guest Jack Broadbent to discuss the recent PGA Championship. He is also joined by Pilch to discuss the England Cricket series' against Pakistan and Ireland.

Cheese settle. Welcome back to the on the ward podcast. This is episode forty eight of the show. Today we're joined by what broady. You've been on for Jack. You both brought he so I can't really say that, can I? Jack and Fin Jack, you've been on before, but Finn will pump you UPMATE, first, first appearance. How are you feeling? Maybe your bit nervous, little nervous. Yeah, I like to hear that. It makes you feel prestigious, but not so. We're here with a few golf experts to chat about the recently completed twenty pj championship, the first major of the year. Is that right that? Do they sneak any in before lockdown on? Now's the first major? Yeah, I think the US opens in a month and the masters and at the end of the year. So we all got around it this weekend, didn't we? A few, a few of us, a few of the other boys in US three. We were kind of keen. It actually worked well for us. The time zone, because it's just when you woke up, was perfect. You could cut to the back nine pretty much of everyone's everyone's Day, and this morning we witnessed Colin Narrek Moricau. It was Heid that right. Yeah, when he's first major at the age of twenty three, joining rory mcroy, Tiger Woods and Jack Nicholas in that well prestigious little group there to win a major at such a young age and he looks like the real deal. Fin What did you make of his well, four days, I honestly thought it was a very mature performance. I'd say. You struggled early in the first couple rounds, but then had a really good weekend and showed an on Sunday on the back nine where all the money's made. Well, I think he took home like almost like two and a half million Australian dolls or something like that. Pretty hand you said, twin prize pool, then the gold here, specially the second major. Yeah, it's unreal, Jack, Jack did you do you think he's going to be as good as those three that we just mentioned or or it's a big call. I don't know if I'm allowed to do this, but I was going to ask a question up to you too, and yeah, go for yeah, is it going to be one of those what another one those golfers who comes and goes sort of wins a major or two and gets lucky or to its heny the real deal? I mean that's a big question. I think he could be. I honestly, anybody you I think I reckon he's the real deal. He's he's one more than he's miscuts. So yeah, I'm well, I loved from him today, especially. I watched, like I got up to really early and watch the whole last round this morning. But I just loved our ballsy. You was, to be honest, on the back nine, like it's sixteen. Well, that was the major shot, that one. He meant he drove apart four and then made eagle and like no one was getting it close really on that whole had to fade it around these trees, dog leg right and he just took it. Took it on. I thought he'd lay it up and hit an unbelievable shot and that proved a different so I think he's got a calm head on his shoulders, but he's not afraid to go for it in the big moment. So you know he's going to be one to watch for sure. I loved him. Yeah, was it the second shot on the eighteen where he was on the fairway and he could easily we were talking about this. He could have I think the was a teen. Yeah, he could have been just like on to the fat side of the fair way and the whole was in like a tricky location. He just went straight for it. So, yeah, he was really left of the green though, but...

...yeah, and he was lucky. He's get a bit lucky on that shot, but you know, fortune favors the brave, is what they say. So very deserved. It is pretty cool, though I can't I don't watch too much golf myself, but it was pretty interesting hearing especially his conversations with his caddy. They see him to have like a very good relationship. It wasn't like the player Domina eating the choices. They sent to working wells at duo, and that was pretty interesting to hear because I've never really heard that dynamic dynamic before. But that's enough for color. I think we've got around him. Final actually, thin do you have if you are saying you've got some things you'd want to say about him? Do? I got emailed with something from Your Golf Club. Yeah, so he won the PGA too event in July two thousand and nineteen, the Baracuta Championship, and he's made twenty. He made twenty two consecutive cuts to start his professional career, which I thought's a really awesome effort and a record only exceeded by Tiger Woods with twenty five. And now he's moved up to the top five in the official world golf rankings. So Handy enough. That's crazy. HMM. Yeah, I hadn't heard of him till he had his playoff hole on the final day of one of the tournaments against jat. Watch that one. Those the work they charity open. Yeah, yeah, like like my older brother, who is quiet into the Gulf nowadays. He was telling me about him and say he's pretty good. So I was kind of had one eye on him all weekend. And it's a pretty bad ball for a little fella. Really hits a massive he's only what like five foot nine or something like that. Yeah, right, and like seventy something kilo, but smacks it pretty of course. One of the best things about I reckon it was a fadeers. Course that's a bit too tech technical for me. There's now paid got him around. It wasn't tough, course THY whenever you missed the fair way, like the rough was really long. Yeah, so you had to be straight off the tea, otherwise you're in trouble. Yeah, in terms of that's enough for column. Got Around him. Yeah, in terms of people who impressed you or surprise you, Jack, who was there anyone who may not have won it? Obviously we're all pretty impressed with colon, but anyone else who caught your fancy? Yeah, another one, I think he's come through and he's the same age as Colin in the college system, was Cameron Champ. He finished on I think it was eight under, but he was right thereabouts on the front nine in the last round. Just made it. I think it was a double buggy on the ninth hole and then that sort of halted his momentum. But Geez, you can hit it. He was hitting massive drives. He's like stingers that hardly left the ground but they were massive and I reckon he is in that probably not as good as Colin, but you know he's in a similar league and he'll be a very good player for a long time. So He's certainly caught my eye this weekend. Yeah, I don't know too much about him but I remember I think he played him on the Australian tournaments late last year. I think. Yeah, he might have. Yeah, hear, I remember him from that. But if you know thoughts on chance weekend? Oh, yeah, you wasn't too bad. Played a solid, solid game of golf, I thought. Mostly on the weekend showed against the big boys he could match it with his I guess long driving. Everyone calls him a big keyter, but you really showed Nice touch around the Greens and showed himself on the weekend in Fido. Who Else who impressed you? Who took your fairity? Well, I thought Matthew Wolf. For me,...

...he finished tied four ten under, three shots back, and I really thought he took his game to another level, considering that was his first major ever. So yeah, it's really good with that unusual swing. Yeah, yeah, I was just thinking then we're talking about all these names. The depth in golf is really strong at the moment, like there's so many guys who you know right up. There's probably really thirty, forty blakes at the moment who could win a major at any time. Yeah, it's really it's has it makes it really interesting because he today with there was so many good players the top of the leaderboard and you don't know who's going to win, say, golfs in a healthy position post the tiger woods domination error. Yeah, yeah, I'd never said just looking at the leader ward now, other people who I can't lie to haven't really heard of Scotty Scheffler. He was pretty impressive. The only shot to under on the final day, but that's kind of just a test. Pretty well throughout the week he was yet solid. Yeah, he's swing was I think there's a last Sol I thought they showed his tea shot. He absolutely sent it like I actually thought he was going to fall low by shot. They had a big slicer on. I rated him. Xander Show Fill A. Obviously we've kind of come to expect that from him nowadays, but he was impressive again, very consistent every single day and yeah, but apart from that everyone else was pretty much expected. I guess how tall he's first two days are pretty impressive, but then kind of got the bobbles. Would have been big disappointment on the Sunday. Was Brooks kept car? Yeah, hundreds, a lot of talk and didn't deliver. Like you said. He's quote after the third round. I'm pretty sure it was. He said a lot of guys on the leaderboard, but I don't think they've won and he said I guess Dj has only one one. I don't know a lot of the guys up there, and then like or I can, I'll win this because none of the others can. With the SMIRK. So just goes to show got a bit ahead of himself. Do you think got to bring it on the Sunday. Yeah, well, that was a surprise, I thought, because he's one of the last two PG championships, going for a stirred and he he's unflappable. Usually he's rock solid. But found a bit of trouble early and you know, but Calma Karma can be a little bit of a you know what sometimes they next time, brooks better keep his mouth shut just concentrate on playing golf. Yeah, he looked. He looked poised for the win all we all tournament as well. He was kind of just a couple shots behind the lead at the end of every day's play. So even most of us were saying he's probably still the favorite going into the fourth and final day. But yeah, complete choke for over par on the Sunday or Monday for us. In terms of other disappointments, broady or Jack so Braudy, I'm so used to it. That's all right, I'm it's going to let who let you down there? Oh, I mean, if terms of guys didn't miss the cut, most of the top players made it, but I think ricky didn't make it. That was a disappointment. Leishman bears. Leishman a shout out to banging out there. He loves beers, Leishman. He didn't make the cut either. I mean Jordan's speeth was disappointing. He did. He had a shocking final round, I think it. And then tiger. Of course, he never really got going and that was be unfortunate because I love tiger, love the way he goes about it, but he just never got going, the old fella. I think a lot of those you know players have been up there this year...

...performed pretty well, like Dj and even Ram and Justin rose and all those sort of players were pretty solid over the four days. Yeah, I think Justin Thomas, he's probably the one I'd pick out. In the end. He shot one on the par for the four days, but he came in pretty, pretty hot the number one rank. Yeah, so I guess, similar to tiger, you would have just been expecting him to at least have one day where he lit it, you know, lit it up, but he didn't really at all. Him, rory and tiger were kind of all sitting around that even pal mark or all weekend. I have to say we're allowed to talk smack about rory macarro, apparently because been I maybe his big golf head. He texts me saying what I think you said. Rory got dogged out of it or something, staying where he was. Yeah, don't know. There's always excuses, always excuses, always, but yeah, in turn, in terms of the blokes who made it luck, I don't know. was there anyone else who maybe who made the cut but just let you down a little bit, be choked on that final day? I guess. How tall do you think? How tongs disappointed with his tournament or would he? Would you take being that good? He shouldn't be, because he ends up, I'd under so he shouldn't feel it. Do himself from them. Saturday after his round, he's or no, would have been Friday there and you spent five six hours on the range after he's like round of golf. Yeah, you had like five under. I think it was the second round and apparently last week he split up with his coach, so that's what they were saying. He left, like I know, left his coach. That's why I was on the range. So surprising though, cooked him out of re Jordance. Be Speith came into the final day seven over Pars like. That's pretty what's happened to Speth? What do you think? He's just in a bit of bad form, or do you really think he just peaked early in his career and he's got to just peter out into just an average player? What do you reckon? Jack or chess? I think fins better off to answer this. Yeah, but we'll go see. Yeah, go for if you know. No, I don't use an unusual performance. I reckon good effort to make the weekend, though, but he is struggling at the moment, especially with the and the driver, which two big thing that's pretty important. Unity, then saving tennis. Jeez. Yeah, no, but we like to say bit of improvement from lately, considering he started his career unbelievably well, with a few majors in the first few years, but now I settled back with the pack now and he's got a battle to make them First Cup in a few weeks, because the cutoff is sitting at ninety fourth in the First Cup right now. So look out. I'd just say he's got time one side speak you still. I wouldn't panic. He's in a bit of a right but he'll be back. He's got talent. Yeah, that's true. True. Guy Didn't play that well though. Over the weekend. Was Gary Woodland and Patrick Cantley. They've been in pretty good for so disappoint President's Cup fells. Yeah, Garrett would lie. I think he was playing with Brooks, I think, and they were. Yeah, they were, especially I think the first two days they'll play together. Yeah, they were. Would was just led down the boys. They actually look like I...

...always saw that other presence cup. Yeah, they do a lot. But yeah, that's pretty much it in terms of the PJ Chaman it fin. Oh, I saw you talking today now golf group chat about Gabby ruffles. Well, we went to school with her. Yeah, work. Explain to me what that tournament structure is. Also confused. It was like thirty eight holes or something. So the first day, or first two days is stroke play to play thirty six holes and then the top I think it's top twelve play match play the next so day three and then, I think it's day four. Is the Finn Okay, I think they might. The thirty seven who stay. Okay, yeah, it's going to say like surely there wasn't twenty playoffs? Yeah, but then they pay thirty six on the last day. Yeah, then the final they have eighteen in the morning, lunch and then eighteen in the other. But I thought, I think she's fair enough to get excited about it because the college system over there is really strong for golf. I will column in Cameron Champ and the guys it talks about. They have just come out of college a year or two ago. So she's doing really well On these tournaments over there. Once she hits the pros, watch out. She could be the next carry web or something like that. On the van. Yeah, female to golf players. Yeah, so the Todt, I forgot to mention the total we were just talking about was the what was it? The women's amateur US Open? You Always Domini? Yeah, yeah, I want to cheap it. Last year. Yeah. Yeah, so she's lighting it up. Yes, I'm enough. That's all. That's all we've got. I reckon. We leave with a few predictions. Jack Row Bent? Who? What? What's the next US opening? I think just over a month. I think it's Atin any any sold predictions for WHO's going to win? There bold predictions for I'd love better. Have to be bold. I like Daniel Burger's name, so can I pick him now? I think one of the big names will win it. I'm going to pick I'ven't thought too much about this, but I'm going to pick roary. I'm gonna write he's going to bounce back. I think he's gonna take it out, and then the masters is after which I think I reckon Jason Day might win the masters. That's my prediction. We all want to say tigers a third record breaking win now. So Yeah, how long ago? I'll take. I don't know. I was going to pick him for the masters. Then I thought that'd be bit bias, so I didn't. I wish. I hope he does. I mean it is Jason Day, not by now. Jason Days in good for me's ad a lot of top end was within me, about six, five, six, like elite Ozzi's that are up there. So compared to the thirty forty Americans, HMM, yeah, you know what about you or, I'd have to say, kept cups one the last two US opens. So look out. And then Justin Thomas. It's about time he before performs in a major, I reckon. Yeah, hundred percent agree. I would like to see jt, yeah, do all the AJOR and not blow. Yeah, yeah, that. Who Do you reckons? The Best Player who have not won a major? For I need a least tend to me and testament knowledge that everything. John R freaky hasn't won one. Yeah, Ricky. Ricky's up there. Yeah, because he's been good for a long time. Obviously, J jt, he's the one one, right. No, I don't think he's won. Tell me fleet...

...would. Yeah, as a couple of those Europeans. Well, Paul Casey was up there today. He's been definite solid player for a long time. But any deck, he's been consistent. Yeah, it dicky's punning's just been letting down under pressure. Yeah, he was a bit he was probably just a few strokes off being disappointing. I think would be a bit harsh. Yeah, for under, but didn't really light it up in any particular round. Rise and made a run for it, but it yeah, he's the big bias and we spend thirty seconds to talk about Brighton like that. Guy is a nutter. Seriously, but I actually I'm warming to him. I think. All right, I'm a friend. Actually agree he makes supporting you. I think you're a fan of every single goal for those fear sorry about you. Don't like you, just love everyone. I'm not a I agree, not a fair right. You need personalities in sport. That's my opinion. Then he's definitely got one. He's a bit different, he's a bit strange, but not a fan of shovel read. Now we don't like him. Noah, that's a red fatrick. Yeah, but yeah, that's pretty much all we've got. What are you boys doing tonight? Watching the footie or bit of father, father, once a life before my tune into a bit of Ninja Warrior, I think it's the finale tonight, and someone finally getting up the mount whatever it's called. Madori, armor, somethingory. Yeah, that's on my gender. Well, enjoy that, have a blast that. I'll go and enjoy my magnum for dessert, and thanks for joining me. Boys. I'm not a hundred percent sure what I'm doing with this episode, but I think we'll be rolling into cricket review after this segment. So enjoy that. Thanks Finn for making your debut. It was very short notice. Thank you for something. Thanks Jack for coming back on now. Worris Matt, thank you. Cheers. Say Boys, welcome back to the on the ball podcast. This is episode forty eight of the show, too away from the milestone fifty. As always, I'm joined by Christian pilcher. Welcome they thanks mate, good to be back. Yeah, always good to be chatting with you. So today we're just going to be we've done quite a few episodes similar to this, but we're going to be discussing England cricket once again. We're going to be discussing the recent test match, the ended two days ago against Pakistan, the first of a three match series, and then we'll be chatting about the England island one day series that took place over the last for fortnight. So we're going to start off well. Firstly, how are you mat I feel like I need to this time I meet. Obviously the people listening can't see this, but I think I need to mention that you do have a you're in a nice little location that actually doesn't look too nice. I can't even tell. I can't tell if it's like a waste land or you've got a background going. Yeah's currently at my holiday house at the moment and I think there's a bit going on in the background. Not sure who did that, but I can't tell. Yeah, but I am same with you, mate. You are you're a UN charted territory. Yeah, this is outside. The Sun's out. Well, now it's gone, but it's nice and warm, so I thought I'd when in Melbourne I've learned that anything over twelve degrees you've got to get outside and soak it up. You got to run away because eithern even in summer, you're not guaranteed that. So deaf woke up. So all the weather and I was like yeah, make sure I get outside. So we're filming outside. So if you hear any weird sounds, it could just be in a bit of nature. There's a fairly major road right next to me, so could be some cars as well. But yeah, so if without further ado, we may as well just get stuck in. How do you what do you think of the first test? Well, to be honest, I didn't actually watch too much...

...of it, but I must say I thought I thought Pakistan and one after the first settings is but turned out to be a good fightback from England. So pleasing result. But yeah, yeah, it is. It's definitely a big result. I think England were behind the April the whole time until maybe an hour to go before they won. Like they just didn't look like winning the whole time, mainly thanks to a charm. The sued hundred in the first innings, which really just set up Pakistan in the end. It was obviously a good win from Pakistan, but good win from England. But it was pretty bad from Pakistan to let that slip. What, how may they score in the first things? I scored three hundred twenty six and they had a lead of a hundred and twenty going into the second innings, which is pretty average. But yeah, a I guess it's a great win from England's point of view. Probably shouldn't just look at it as a pessimist and focus on the negatives. I should say fair play to England. Did very well given the circumstances. I wrote them off. Did you reckon coming into day for they were a chance or not really, and I'd written them off as well. I think I shot you a text on day three or four. I was like yeah, we've certain loss in coming here. Yeah, yeah, I think I've been coming into day for England needed two hundred and twenty or something with they had all the wickets left, but or maybe it was a bit more to day. But yeah, they did pretty well. Looked there was a bit of it early. Well, not a collapse, but they're quite a few wickets lost early. And then Butler and works put on a magical partnership of about a hundred and fifty. They did it fast as well. They counterattacked. It came out in social on social media, that Joe Rout had said to joss Butler before he went out to about he said, you know who you are just about. You love chasing down targets just about like it's a one day. And he did love words human works when in a strike rate of just under a hundred, I'm pretty sure. So very well done to them and well, I may as well just bring it up now because we're talking about them and that's why they got my five and four votes. With back doing the votes again, I'm loving my votes at the moment. I just worked out a brown low from round one to the current day. So that's definitely not a huge waste of time and life, but that's all right. So I gave my five votes to Chris Works and my four votes to Joss Butler. Did you have the same or did you get I definitely had works as five. He was he was obviously getting the five. But I've found these votes that they're quite hard to decipher, especially but when you're doing five of them. But I actually gave my Ford Stuart broad because I thought he was England's best bowler easily and did a lot. Is Bold did a little bit with the bat as well, with the cheeky twenty nine not out to ensure that the lead wasn't monstrous going into the second INNIS. That's a huge call, mate. I don't mind it, though. I gave him one vote, but I think that's pretty bloody stiff on Shamasud to be taking him over him. But Fair. So I gave my Ford to Josh but L. I just think although he only scored, what did he score? Seventy five. They didn't go just under a hundred strike rate by the way. They went at s but I think they slowed down still light when it yeah, I think when it got a bit closer, they got a bit more patient. Yeah, Butler made seventy five. So, although it's nothing close to Sharma suits a hundred and fifty six, I just thought I'd think I do it. Don't do this enough in my votes. I don't favor the win like I don't respect the win enough, and it's very rare in a cricket game that you can really put the wind down to one innings or one bowling like spell. But it's pretty clear that the...

...wind came down to this Butler and works partnership. So that's why I pretty much instantly pick them as my five and for be yeah, works got eighty four not out. Then he took two for eleven, made nineteen the first innings, not great, and took two four hundred and forty three in the first so he's ended up with about four fifty and a hundred runs in total for only one wicket. So it's a pretty boddy good test. I was looking on twitter. I think ICC or someone tweeted. Who Do you think is men in the match, and even all the Pakistani people were saying it's works as well, which is pretty rare because you would think someone is scored a hundred fifty six in the first innings would instantly get five votes. But yeah, so shamasuit limited to three votes for me. I don't know how he went for you. Yep, three votes for me as well. I think the wind probably came into account a little bit, there by giving broad the for but he did screwed duck in the second innings. But he did have a great test, obviously great first innings. Berthree. Three for me as well. Yeah, it took took six wickets, I think, three in each. Yeah, so he got my one vote and then I gave Yasis Sho to votes. He took two fourths. Yester show. It's always a hard one because he takes a lot of wicked it's, but he bowls so many overs and he usually goes for quite a few runs as well. Actually, we'll see. said the other day that he's like a good limitter of runs and helps the other guys take wickets via the offense him. I don't really agree with that. I know you watch more Pakistan cricket than me, but I think, like I think he's bowling statistics in his career, like his average and stuff, show that he actually goes to quite a lot of runs and but it's more just due to the fact that he bowls a lot over, so it's always tough to judge his wickets. But yeah, he took eight wickets for the game. Almost had a temper. But this, this pitch did favor spinners, as it showed him western East. So I think you'll have a bit more troubled down in Southampton, where the next two tests are. But we'll see how he go. So he got too for me and brought braw got one for me. So who got you two and one? Yeah, to went to Josh Butler. I must submit he was. He didn't have the best game with the gloves, which is why I docked him a few points. He missed a stumping, dropped a couple catches, let in a few buys, but he did get really badly. Yeah, but then then again, as he said he was, he pretty much won the game with works at the end. But Yep, to for him and one for Shah. Yeah, very fair. So that now just quickly looking. We won't focus on this. We'll go back to talking about the test series. But Um, in terms of our overall leader boards for I don't know test cricket of the year or test cricketer of the summer in England or whatever. I've got broad and Butler on top, which I have to say I'm not happy about but ler. He's lucky to be in the tower. I can't, I can't keep saying that. To be fair, he has played two really good tests. Hence white gave votes. So I think he's locked in his spot for a little bit now. But him in broader on seven. Then I've got works type with Rost and chase ons. So you've got still broad on ten votes, I think. Yeah, he must be tough for me. No, yeah, he's well clear. Works is on eight for you and then obviously the Pakistani's. It's only their first test for you. So wait, did you say you gave Jos to votes? Yep, okay, so, Oh yeah, that's your first votes for Butler. So yeah, they're not really relevant. So few. It's just broader and then works and then a long gut back to stokes. So, speaking of Stokes, it has been announced that he will not be playing the rest of the series. He's going to New Zealand for family reasons, which obviously takes him out for quite a while. Because you know he's got a quarantine there and quarantine here. Yeah, well, in England, so there's...

...no chance of him playing cricket for the rest of the summer pretty much. I don't think he would have played the teachinies anyway. Obviously I don't really like talking about the sporting impact with stuff like this, all like long term injuries, because it's obviously pales and compared uson to in importance. It's just a game really, cricket. But in terms of the impact on the England team I think it's pretty huge, although he hasn't done too much in the last two tests. I think England were batsman short in the last the way they've been picking their team in the moment I think there are batsman short. I think Butler is six and works at seven. Although they did really well, this test is ambitious at best. So all of a sudden to take one of the best or the second best batsman in that England team out of that Middle Order, it's going to leave England seriously thin. Do you think with stokes leaving the team, do you reckon they have to go back to Butler at seven and then pick two batsman or do you think it's just a straight spot cruelly for stokes? Well, I'll say that I don't think. I think they will keep the extra bowler because the reason they they've been playing these extra bowlers because stokes has been unfit to bowl the last few tests and now we obviously can't bowl because he's out. So I think we'll play an extra bowler still. Whether we should or not, that's a different question. I'm not too sure. I mean it has worked since we've started doing it, but it does mean the top order, the top order has to bat well for it to work. As you said, it's pretty hard to judge because it's been working well, but I don't write it, especially now that that batting order is so fragile, all of a sudden roots out of form. Has Been for almost three years now. Sibley's in good touch, but you know, human burns aren't experienced like veterans yet. And then pope, although he's really talented, he's not like consistent and reliable at this stage. So and then Butler's obviously had issues in test cricketies whole career. Yea. So I think it's pretty ambitious to keep it with the six bats I do get the logic with stokes out, but I don't really know why you need for pace bowlers anyway, like even when stokes was playing. Like I just don't get why you need four pace bowlers. I think even without an all rounder, I think three pace bowlers and a spinners good enough for me personally. Anyway. It might mean you have to drop James Anderson because I don't know if he can handle that workload anymore. I think they might be resting him anyway just because he's played, I think it's quite three tests in a row now, maybe for I don't know. I think he's set out of the second test but I don't think they'll want to be pushing him too much, so I wouldn't be surprised if he sits out. So for me the ideal lineup, that the issue is. I don't know who the other bats and to bring him would be. But yeah, for me the ideal lineup would be to sit out James Ends and drop Butler down to seven, works down to eight. slidens that cruelly three, root for pope five and then I'd probably just give Dan Lawrence a crack at sticks. But that's I don't think that's very likely. I think the thing is I don't even know if Joe Denley's in the bubble to actually don't know. It's confusing. But so do you reckon? You Reckon Zach Crawley at for, or is that Crawley at three? What would you prefer to see? I'd prefer him to be free and root at for, definitely. Yeah, I don't know. It's just pointless really. I'm not sure why they toyed with root at for and then like he seemed to prefer it and then they just chucked him back to three like a couple tests later. Does make much sense to me. But yeah, I guess I'm happy to see crawling him in another crack. I think it is pretty unfairly dropped in the first place. I know it was...

...for team balance, but nothing of his own doing. Hopefully they don't pick denly again. Hopefully they give it a chance to someone else. To be honest, I would almost rather see Butler and work state six and seven and see denly given another crack. But yeah, so that's pretty much it for the test. In terms of Pakistan. We impressed with their side, or do you think England will win this series pretty comprehensively. Will my initial thoughts where these blocks are way better than the West indies, but then we sort of we dominated them on the last two days. But they still are better than the West indies. So I could certain winning a game, especially especially with stokes out now. Yeah, I think will be a very good effort. If England whitewash them. Would I think two ones probably the most likely serious result if the weather holds. But yeah, I don't know, I don't know. I think I think both teams are in a very similar spot. I think they're both batsman short, although the Middle Order of Pakistan's very strong. I think should ab can't at seven, although he did have a nice little cameo in the first innings. I don't think he's good enough to be anomber seven. Really he was just like padding up and running. So he's clearly not like a talented batsman. But the problem is, when we're talking about this in the predictions and preview episode, the other Batsman in their square a no good either. They're in really bad form and they've never really done anything in their test careers, so I don't really know what they do. I think they've got a stick with it. They were pretty close to a win. After all. It was just one partnership away, one wicked away really, from winning that test. So I think they will probably stick with the same lineup. I think the bowling attacks fine. Yeah, so, yeah, they're just probably got a lift. I did think BARBERA's arm would struggle, although he made seventy in the first innings. Both innings he got out similar way, snicking off trying to play a pretty aggressive cover drive. I did think he would have issues with that because he's a very fluent player. He likes to feel the battle the ball, which you can't do in England. But yeah, as Ali really needs to lift. They were saying something outrageous like his averages fourteen outside of Asia. Really. Yeah, I don't know if that's a hundred percent crasy. Be Huge in Asia then yeah, I don't know if it's just in England or be. Yeah, pretty sure they were saying fourteen or something for outside Asia, which is outrageous. That is that's that's Yucky. He's the captain so that he needs to lift in particular. But yeah, I guess we'll just see how it goes. That's pretty much it for that we're just got to see how the next two test role. I have to say I'll seeing about this before we came on air. It's frustrating because all the one day guys are back playing county cricket, which is good to see, but then I'm pretty sure this is the only round they can play before they go into the twenty bubble and then before you know it they'll be playing ipl and nowadays with the modern cricket calendar, it's just so hard for these guys to like impress to make the test team if they're playing limited overs cricket. Yeah, like I don't really know how Johnny Bestow has the time to show that he can still play test cricket without like sacrificing his limited over his career a little bit. I guess that's the decision they've got to make. But Johnny best or is someone I don't know how it all works, because I don't know if you have to have been in the bubble this whole time to be picked in the team. But Johnny Besto is someone who would not shock me if they gave him another crack, especially if they need someone to about low, like number six or something. That is, if they only pick three bowlers, which is a pretty interesting call. But yeah, I don't know. It's probably not too likely, really is it doesn't make much sense. But I know they do love Johnny. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I doubt it. Yeah, it's true, but not it's exciting when all the one day and t twenty players play county like Tom Ben's playing for Somerset. I think it is. But...

...yeah, it's sad that they ain't get more cracks at it. But that takes us to the island tour of England. Such a big tour, such a large journey. What do you think of this series? You watched probably a bit more of this than the test match. Actual, I don't I I was probably similar as well. But what do you think of this series? We impressed the island or do you think they just won one game just because England was playing like their B team? Well, obviously the the time zone made it so we could only really watch probably half of the first innings, maybe a bit more than half. Yeah, so the first two one days we saw Ireland be about six four fifty in both of them and I was just like Jesus Christ, but as a waste of doll but then you wake up and see Kevin O'Brien did some things. And then, obviously the last one day. I didn't watch it, but a got no idea what happened. They're like, I don't know if we bold like shit door. They just put on a clinic. But I was definitely a shock waking up to that. Yeah, that took me by like a pretty big surprise as well, I won't lie, even though they really struggled, especially early on in the eatings. Yeah, I actually like, I didn't mind the island team. I think they've got a few pretty good players. They were clearly out of their depth, though, but it has to be said, coming back from lockdown, I think both teams deserve a bit of like slack. You can't really expect them to just come out and start playing like World Cup form once again. But for me, the man who impressed me the most man of the series. I did my votes for this series as well. He won my player the series as well as David Willie had an APP for blind or series, obviously helped by the fact that their top order was very fragile. But he took eight wickets at an average of eighteen. And how many runs with the stick. How many runs he made? Ninety eight runs in two innings and one of them were not out. So just dominated with bat and ball. Not sure who would have picked that in our preview for that series. I don't even know if we had him in the team. I think. I don't know. I think we're in a toss up between him and Topley. I think it's but yeah, that's pretty outrageous that he staked his claimed that strongly. There is a vacant spot in that World Cup team. Isn't there? Because plunk it, if I'm not mistaken, he was in that lineup. Wasn't here for the World Cup. Yeah, and Archer as well. Oh yeah, so I think I'd actually I think plunk it might have retired from not a hundred percent sure, but they were talking about it throughout the series. So if there's a bowling spot open, basically what Willie's just got to start out with both hands. None of the England quicks really impressed that much. toply only got the one game, only took one wicket. Sake mood he took four wickets in three games, but he was really blowing out of the water by David Willie I have to say I do agree with what KP was saying. I don't know if you heard it in one of the I think was the first dirty eye, might have been the second one. He was just saying it's the stupidest idea to rest players after they've had a five month break because lockdown, and I have to say it's very true. It's Candi down. They want to give every other yeah, I wanted to I understand they want to give every on a crack, but he was saying, like Tom Curran being rested is like the stupidest thing currently. Karen on one match I played to okay, he actually didn't do very well. Yeah, it's pretty I was very just I was very disappointed with Karen. Connie rat six and wick. It only one wicket. I...

...think he is suited. I know the sounds weird, but actually think he's suited against better teams because they'll try and attack him more, especially the back end of innings. They'll try and, you know, be going at tens, tens and twelves and over where. Island were pretty happy to go out like Sixers, which I don't think suited his bowling style that much. But Yeah, David Willie Man of the hour, I have to say obviously not really much of a shock. Is a quality player, but I deal Rashid. He really starred with the ball. Five wickets a Connie Rad to for so really impressive stuff from him. The island players just had no idea at some points with him and he really took control of the Games in the middle. In the middle periods. Moyen Ali didn't take a single wicket. So maybe similar to Tom Curran, he needs people to attack him. Maybe, but yeah, probably not ideal for his hopes to stay in this one day team. I know, I know he's a bit of a legend but he didn't have the greatest series either. He had the only batter once actually, which was pretty sit for him, and he only made three. So he could be getting shipped off out of that team for maybe leam Dawson or something, which is not ideal news for Moen Ali. In terms of the island side, they'd quite a few plays impressed me. Curtis Camp Fire. It was his first ever series for Ireland. He made a hundred and twenty seven in two winnings, one not out as well. He made two s and then with the ball he took five wickets in twenty one overs, strike rate to twenty five. So although he was batting very low, so a lot of the times he had had like plenty of time to bat. He did very well. He's a young guy who came over from South Africa. I think they were telling a story. Apparently in countering cricket he was arsting Nile O'Brien, Kevin's brother, and he no I was batting and Curtis Camphor walked up to him and said, by the way, I'm alleged would play for island if you want to pick me, which pretty strange tactic. Maybe I'll try that tactic for Scotland. I'll find some Scottish cricketer. Just let him know. But yeah, and then in terms of the other vote, so can't forgot five votes for me and they're best stones. Sterling were also tied on five. They both scored hundreds opening the batting in their respective games. So yeah, pretty big win for island, though, although they lost the series. To win a Odi against somewhat full strength England team doesn't happen every day. As I think I put it on my instagram story, the last time England lost to a team that was ranked outside the top ten. I think was twenty early two thousand and eighteen against Scotland. So doesn't happen too often, though, so very impressive for island. Promising stuff. But yeah, any any last words on this little one day series? I can't lie. I wasn't that important. But yeah, yeah, I'll just say congrats on island for that. Clinic in the last one day or took everyone by surprise, I must submit. I went to I went to sleep and we were going at like seven and a half and over with plenty of wickets in hand, and then we didn't even make three hundred and fifty. So be collapsed. Must happened after Morgan got out. But yeah, island, island deserved it. Wait, did I say the Best I scored a hundred? Yeah, I think so. I mean you scored eighty. It's got eighty two. So yeah, my bad Owen Morgan was the only century in terms of that. Predictions. I just remember we did predictions. I think we both said best o toll run scorer. He was fourth behind Morgan billings. I didn't mention billings, beast. We said he did pretty wells but he was kind of coming in junk time. So Morgan billings, Willie and then best doing it for so we're pretty far off there. Told wikids. I once again don't really know who he said. I think we both said K...

I said car yeah, who was tired, fourth behind Willie Rashidammod. So two really good predictions there from pilch and Cork. I love adding Alan Batting. I think you said Bell Bernie and I said Kevin O'Brien. Bell Burnie was second behind sterling and O'Brien was sixth. So some really good some more really good predictions. I guess Bel Bernie did right. Scored a century. And then island bowling. Geez, I don't know if we either made it to prediction. Here I said shot. I think he's took a single wicket. Hey, I mean seeing simmything. Yes, sorry, seeing no wickets. He only won five over. So you'll robbed there. I won't lie. I don't know who I said. I think I said Boyd ranking and he didn't even play pretty gootty. Good for the good from us. We are insightful men. So yeah, that's all we've got today in terms of the cricket.
